Statement from Maestro Fresh Wes about Classified record
Toronto, ON – Canadian hip-hop legend Maestro Fresh Wes reached out to HipHopCanada to release a statement about the controversy surrounding the collaboration with Classified on “Quit While You’re Ahead” and the apparent diss to October’s Very Own. To bring people up to speed, some have insinuated that Maestro’s verse on Classified’s song “Quit While You’re Ahead” which also features Choclair, was a shot at Drake’s recent success. Classified pointed out on the HipHopCanada Community forums that the song had been recorded prior to Drake becoming a star… “It couldn’t happen any quicker”. Here is a message from Maestro:
Peace and Love,
It was recently brought to my attention that my verse on Classified’s joint “Quit While You’re Ahead ” offended a lot of my hip-hop family. I was shocked to find this out and also surprised that it seems to be a consensus. Just to set the record straight, I’ve been involved in this game for over 25 years professionally and I can honestly say I have never dissed any Canadian MC on a track. I don’t get down like that. Anybody who truly knows me would support me on this. Classified asked me to spit fire on the song and that’s what I did similar to when Ghetto Concept asked me to on the Still Too Much track. I’m from the era of Rakim, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Kool Moe Dee, and Krs One and this was a time when an MC was supposed to state he is the greatest. My track was nothing but straight up Ol Skool MC’ing. As I have just completed my first motivational book entitled “Stick To Your Vision” I have been constantly reminiscing about the 25 great years I’ve been a part of the Canadian music scene. At this time especially it was discouraging to know my words in a track unintentionally offended my peers.
Nonetheless, because I am a fan of local upcoming MC’s, producers as well as other artists , I feel that it’s important to let you all know that your opinions matter to me. I would never intentionally do or say anything disrespectful to you. You are the ones who have been supporting and looking up to me for over 2 decades and making me work harder. I am not sending this out because I feel that I need to, but because I have the utmost respect and love for my fellow Canadian artists and I wanted to re-enforce that to you.
And this goes out to everybody I have worked with in the past, as well as those who I haven’t worked with yet in Toronto as well as across Canada.
Special shout out to Belly and CP Records, Kardinal Offishall, Drake and Boi 1da (congrats once again on the Grammy Nominations), Eternia, k-os, K’Naan, and Classified.
Not only am I proud of you, but I’m humbled by your hustle as well as your talent. Keep killin’ em !!!!
Your Big Brother and fan,
The MAESTRO FRESH WES
