4 Canadians nominated at 2010 BET Awards

Toronto, ON – Not everyone in Canada has access to BET (Black Entertainment Television) but if access is available, it’s highly recommended that you tune in for the 2010 BET Awards to support your fellow Canadians.

Never before have so many Canadians been shortlisted for BET’s awards broadcast with Drake, Melanie Fiona, K’naan and Justin Bieber all receiving nominations.

Melanie Fiona received a total of four nominations including Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Artist, the BET Centric Award and Video of the Year award for “It Kills Me”. Melanie falls just short of Jay-Z’s 5 nominations to lead the pack.

Drizzy, who will also perform at the awards gala, actually has a total of five nominations but only if you include the Best New Artist and Viewer’s Choice nominations that went to his group Young Money. His other nominations are for Best Hip-Hop Artist and he has 2 singles up for best collaborations including “Successful” and “Forever”.

K’naan received a nomination for Best International Act, which we hear he has a great chance of winning.

The nomination list did not come without a bit of controversy. Sixteen year-old Stratford, Ontario R&B sensation Justin Bieber received a nomination for Best New Artist and it has many blogs and social media postings questioning whether he belongs based on him being a white artist. This has caused Justin himself to take to Twitter with his thoughts and even the likes of P. Diddy have voiced their opinion in defense of the young star:

“The awards are important to hip-hop and to show (hip-hop artists) in the right light. But the beauty of BET is, if Justin Bieber’s hot, then he deserves to be on that stage. Sometimes, at other award shows, the colour of your skin or the type of music you make takes away from getting the accolade you deserve.”

Justin’s Twitter messages included:

“Thank u to BET for nominating me for Best New Artist @ the BET Awards this year!! This is an incredible honor and I’m very grateful… read some articles about my bet nomination n (and) i think this goes 2 show that music is color blind… Music is the universal language no matter the country we are born in or the color of our skin. Brings us all together.”

Anthony Mandler, who directed both of Drake’s last videos and has worked with tons of other top artists including Rihanna, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige and more, is nominated for Video Director of the Year.

The ceremony will be hosted by the legendary Queen Latifah and will air live on Sunday, June 27 at 8:00 p.m.
