What will Drake sell? [Article]
Toronto, ON – The over-under game of predictions for Drake’s album started weeks ago. Now that Thank Me Later is finally available in stores, HipHopCanada brings you some exclusive comments on the issue.
“He’s gonna do about 750-800,000 first week,” said Nova, one half of A Game. “If not, he’s doing a milli for sure.”
Lil Wayne went over everyone’s head from Rikers Island telling MTV “”A million in a week? I need him to do more than Tha Carter III. Like 2 million in the first week. I need him to do 2 million the first week, straight up.”
HipHopCanada Co-owner Jesse Plunkett has been said to have placed bets pinning Drake’s sales at 1.4 million by June 22nd.
T.I. & Bun B both came in around the 500,000 copy mark which would certify Drake’s album as gold.
“I’m confident in my man,” T.I. told Hot 97. “I think if 500,000 was the over, under, I would take the over. Given his potential and his presence, I would. I think that’s safe, that’s a safe bet. He hasn’t put out a dud yet. He hasn’t put out a dud, not even as a feature, so I think that warrants about a half [a million].”
“1.5 – 2 million first week. People are camping. Lol”, Bishop Brigante sent via txt message. “When Star and Buc issued that bet to Drake for 5 grand that he wouldn’t go platinum, I tried in all my power to accept the bet. I reached out to tell them I got 5 stacks on it but they never got back. They shook cause they know they hatin’ asses would of lost. On record.”
Junia-T dropped his predictions at the Stylus Awards to HipHopCanada’s Chantle Beeso: “I think he’ll clear a mill. But locally he’s gonna sell 25 thousand. I want to be proven wrong. I know the States will buy it up.”
Toronto based DJ Dames Nellas, who recently toured with Slaughterhouse, Pharoahe Monch & Busta Rhymes told HipHopCanada he’s predicting 700,000.
As for Drake, when I caught up with him at the Stylus Awards he had this to say.
“Nah man, no predictions. I’m just doing it for the city man.”
That he is…
