Gee Wunder’s Jewels Vol. 3: Inspiration [Blog]

Toronto, ON – Welcome back to Gee Wunder’s Jewels! Thanks for coming back! First off, I wanna big up all Canadians local, national and worldwide doing big tings in de music game! Inspiration is a feeling that we get from outta nowhere. At the time, when we feel inspired, we might get goosebumps, or our hair will stand on end. As an artist, inspiration is the fuel to your fire… your L in the morning… Without this key emotion, the creative process stalls before it even starts.

As a fledgling producer in 2003, I was inspired daily by Scratch Magazine. Scratch, in the four years it was in print, became a staple in my hip-hop life, featuring tips and interviews with various producers from Ron Brownz, Emile & The Runners to Cool & Dre, Eminem and many others. The publication ceased operations in November 2007… if you are a producer and have never heard of Scratch… find it somewhere!

In 2010, musical inspiration has been coming fast and furious here in the Dot! With the big homie Drake leading the charge, various artists from Toronto including Melanie Fiona, Kardinal Offishall, K’naan, Andreena Mill, August, and Untitled have made major in-roads into the music industry outside of Canada. Big congratulations are due!

My latest local inspiration comes from a hot new mixtape that I’m co-signing called Memory Lane by NEM-S-ISS. The mixtape is full of stellar production — mainly handled by SoundSmith Productions which is one of the hottest production teams coming out of Toronto. It also has a gang o’ dope features including Mayhem Morearty, Mezziah (Empire), Richie Sosa, Yung Jixx (GCP) and Nem’s gangstress lil’ sis Baby Grhyme. The mixtape features old and new tracks combined for a cohesive set.

Memory Lane, HipHopCanada, is where MY inspiration comes from this month!
