Fortune Sound Club celebrates their one-year anniversary [Photos/Review]
Vancouver, B.C. – It’s hard to believe that Fortune Sound Club only opened a year ago – in that short span everyone from EPMD to Dead Prez to Lil Kim has graced its stage. Owners and promoters GMAN and RIZK have helped to shape the face of hip-hop in Vancouver in many ways, but Fortune Sound Club is one of the most innovative.
Built with eco-friendly features, collaborative artist murals and the most powerful sound system in the Vancouver scene, the “big sound in little China” also holds its biggest parties. It was adventurous to put a club right in the heart of Chinatown, away from club alley on Granville Street downtown. Subsequently, Fortune attracts a different kind of crowd – you’re as likely to see plaid as you are pinstripes, a cross-section of the city’s party-goers.
By 11 the place was packed. The staff at fortune do their jobs well, and without the attitude that bouncers and bartenders tend to carry. On the one year anniversary the bouncers were joking around with the customers, the bartenders smiling at the drinkers. I guess a gifted drink helps set a positive tone…Celebrating a full year of success, attendees were entertained by a plethora of soundmakers, including RICO UNO (The Freshest), HEDSPIN (Eh! Team DJs), SINCERELY HANA (Glory Days), MARLON J ENGLISH (Boyscouts), ROB RIZK (Experience), CHERCHEZ (Juice Box), GENIE (Culture Club) and MY!GAY!HUSBAND! (Culture Club).
Surprise guest Crystal Waters made an appearance, only fanning the flames of a live night although a mere fraction of the young crowd was familiar with her work. GMAN and Rob Rizk came out to thank everyone and present the birthday cake, after which young poet Jus Musiq gave a well-received uplifting, unconventional spoken word piece. The night was topped off by some popping bottles of bubbles, and beats that only Fortune Sound could provide.
