“Intimate & Interactive Open Mic was created to bring a sense of awareness around not only performance art but the art of media training in artists as well. Every headliner has been hand-selected to perform and answer questions from the audience in regards to their push and struggle to the top. Intimate & Interactive proves that everyone has a story and Toronto has many unknown diamonds in the rough ready to take form. I’ve put my all into this night and I hope to see all of you there.” – Tika Simone
About Tika Simone
Over the past 7 years, Tika Simone has been honing herself as a musician and prepping to release her 1st studio album. Although people recognize her from MTV’s The Hills Aftershow, few know that she started out as a gifted singer and classically trained violinist. Noticing that there wasn’t a consistent outlet in the city of Toronto for gifted & up and coming artists on the weekend, she took charge. DJ Lissa Monet initially fueled the “open mic” idea to Tika Simone and coaxed her into taking it seriously. Tika opted to not only have a headliner each and every week but also to make the Open Mic Night Audition-Only. “There is a lot of talent here. But if you want to be a headliner or open for a headliner, your artistry needs to be on point. I wanted to make sure these up-and-coming artists understand what the headliners do. It’s work and it’s not a joke.” She also decided to call the night Intimate & Interactive, meaning that each headliner has to perform 2 sets AND answer questions from the audience in between each set. “Being in television AND music, I understand the importance of media training and performance quality within artists. I wanted the night to have merit.”
After doing grueling auditions for 2 weeks, she found some incredible diamonds in the rough and some massive talent. “There is a definite void in this city for an outlet for great talent. Which is a shame because the amount of talent that is here is flabbergasting,” she states. After 5 weeks of planning, Tika called in a favour from photographer friend Ishmil Waterman who was eager to not only capture the pictures for each event night but to take special photos of each headliner for all flyers. “Every headliner should feel appreciated and special. They work so hard. I also want to show the up-and-comers that they can be headliners too. Everyone wants to see their face on a flyer at least once. This is a night for music lovers and appreciators. I know everyone will bring the heat but some of these Open Mic artists are insanely talented….I’m ecstatic I was able to put this together. This is a night Toronto won’t want to miss. We just started history,” she states.
