Sold-out Launch a Success for 2nd Edition Hip-Hop Cards; Mayhem Morearty Presented with Signature Card [PSA/Photos]
Toronto, ON – The 2nd edition of the Toronto series Legends of the Fame Hip-Hop Trading Card was released on Friday, March 18th. Fifty performers, a sold-out event and history in the making made for a high-energy release party at Suba Lounge in downtown Toronto.
Created by Fred E Fame and sponsored by HipHopCanada.com, the Legends of the Fame campaign was designed to recognize and promote the hip-hop community in Canada from coast-to-coast. This 2nd Toronto series was highly-anticipated after the success of the first Toronto series in January, a photoshoot tour from Vancouver to Halifax, and Grammy and Juno award winners aligned for a card of their own.
The idea behind the Legends of the Fame Hip-Hop Cards is to trade and collect the cards – to create a dialogue among artists, producers, DJs and promoters. And that’s exactly what happened at the launch. Card packs were dispersed, ripped open and traded. Groups of people looking to trade cards were meeting for the first time. Over the weekend Facebook wall-messages popped up among fans and artists reaching out to find specific cards.
In true baseball card fashion, each card has a photo, mini bio and “stats” including rookie year, position played (ie MC/Singer/Producer etc), websites and any affiliations. Its five cards in a pack and you never know what cards you will receive. These packs are given to show promoters, record labels, artists and fans to show just what Canada has to offer. The release party offered artists the opportunity to connect face-to-face and perform two of their best songs. Toronto has been noted as the “Screwface Capital of the World”, but on Friday the crowd was cheering on performers and there was a certain respect amongst the artists. Even veteran artists were listening intently to the verses that the new generation were bringing to the table, some performing for the very first time. And when the seasoned artists took the stage, there was a renewed energy and affirmation that Canadian hip-hop is alive and well.
One of the veterans at Friday’s launch was Mayhem Morearty, who is featured as the Signature Card for this edition. With hype-man Trigz and producer Soze, Mayhem performed an impressive set, including favorites like “Main Squeeze,” “Late Night Creep,” “Hood is Here,” “100 Strong,” “Go Dumb,” “Loose Cannon” and “All the Way Gone.” One of the event highlights was when Mayhem was presented with one of the rare Mayhem Morearty Signature Series cards by none other than Fred E Fame himself.
“It was an honor to keep the spirit of Toronto hip-hop alive and I’m committed to bringing this project to every major city in Canada”. says Fred E Fame
