DJ Woogie Talks 1000 Mixtapes & Touring The World [Article]
Scranton, Pennsylvania – Picture DJ Woogie out in Essen, Germany, spinning on stage in front of a crowd of 17,000 fanatical fans. Or in Dubai, or maybe London or Tokyo, bringing a variety of hip hop to whatever club or venue he destroys that night. Now picture Woogie with his ear to the street, crafting over 1000 mixtapes since he started as a DJ back in Scranton, Pennsylvania, dreaming of being just like his favourite DJs. Either way you cut it, Woogie has taken humble beginnings and made a name for himself as a premiere DJ around the world.
“I wouldn’t say I planned to make it this far, but I did work very hard to get to where the DJ Clue’s, KaySlay’s, DJ Who Kidd are and so on. I said one day I’ll be a tour DJ and do shit like that one day and I did it.”
Woogie’s first step was at Shadyville Radio in the early 2000`s, working with G-Unit when they were just getting hot. And although he is thankful for the experience he gained working with different G-Unit artists, Woogie will tell you that his biggest move was branching out on his own and hooking up with Soulja Boy’s label SOD Money gang. They met at a festival in Las Vegas and everything took off from that point on.
“He asked me to be his DJ and do all of the DJing for his artists and mixtapes and so on. People thought he was going to be a one hit wonder. Then we hit they ass with “Turn My Swag On” and “Kiss Me Through The Phone.” It was a wrap after that.”
Saying it’s a wrap is definitely an understatement. Woogie has had success that surpasses street cred, success that goes far beyond rocking night clubs and putting out mixtapes. Partly because he understands the power he has as a DJ, and takes that responsibility seriously.
“As a DJ I feel we are the point of making people dance and/or getting familiar with a song because we play the music where it`s to be heard. And when we co-sign that makes people say yes or no.”
But he is quick to point out that although he only spins quality music, he still loves the grind and realizes where much of his appreciation comes from.
“I love to feed the streets who demand my work and continue to book me throughout the year. I got a lot of fans who fuck with me heavy.”
Over 1000 mixtapes is more than feeding the streets. Not to mention Woogie is working on an album of his own that he promises will more have surprises and features, on top of being packed with hip hop and club music.
For all the different clubs in the world Woogie has rocked, he has never been to Canada. But you can bet that it`s only a matter of time before he adds Canada to the already extensive list of conquests.
“I’ve never been to Canada yet, but DJ Woogie is on his way to rock a club or show. I promise you will not be disappointed with what I do and what I have to bring you.”
