Drake awarded the 2011 Hal David Starlight Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Award [News]
New York, NY – Congratulations to Drake for receiving the Hal David Starlight Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Award this past Thursday at the 42nd Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Awards Gala. The Songwriters’s Hall of Fame website explains the awards’ signifigance: “this prestigious award was established to honor gifted songwriters who are at an apex in their careers and are making a significant impact in the music industry via their original songs. Past awardees include Rob Thomas, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, John Legend, John Rzeznik and Jason Mraz.”
Drizzy, who is the first hip-hop artist to receive the Hal David Starlight award, was honored alongside some musical legends including Chaka Khan and Garth Brooks. Before accepting his award, Drake performed his song “The Calm” (off the mixtape So Far Gone) which he dedicated to John Bettis. Drake arrived at the ceremony inside New York’s Marriott Marquis with his mother and he dedicated the award to her during his acceptance speech.
