Hail Mary Mallon – Are You Gonna Eat That? [Review]

Vancouver, B.C. – Mary Mallon, also known as “Typhoid Mary,” worked as a cook in the New York City area and was the first known healthy carrier of Typhoid Fever. While working as a cook she infected numerous clients until being confronted by Dr. Sara Josephine Baker and was quarantined several times before eventually passing away at the age of 69. Now, almost 75 years after her death Typhoid Mary has become the current inspiration for the new RhymeSayers “super-group” Hail Mary Mallon.

Hail Mary Mallon

“Super-group”, is a term that tends to get thrown around a lot when artists who are typically known for their solo works choose to combine their efforts to produce an entire album together. Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and DJ Big Wiz are the current culprits who have been slapped with the super- group label, dropping their first full album Are You Gonna Eat That?

The dark, sinister production laced with carefully placed cuts from DJ Big Wiz sets the mood for the majority of this album, yet on tracks like “Grubstake” and “Break Dance Beach” it strays from this sound and has a bit of fun, adding variety and preventing the album from meshing together. Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic, both known for their intricate wordplay, complement each others’ lyricism extremely well throughout each of the tracks. This is exemplified on “Table Talk,” in which they flip between each others’ bars in a similar fashion that The Beastie Boys are so well known for.

Hail Mary Mallon threw all the right ingredients in the pot and cooked up another example of why 2011 is looking so bright for hip-hop music – even Typhoid Mary herself would have been impressed with this tasty treat. If you have the attention span of a goldfish this album might go right over your head but if you’re interested in hearing just what it takes to be deemed a “super-group” these days, Are You Gonna Eat That? will definitely not disappoint.
