HeatWave and Killawatt Records Prepare for HeatWave Classic 2011 on July 23rd in Vancouver [Article]

Vancouver, B.C. - While Vancouver is full of thriving and talented hip-hop artists and events, it’s rare to see an artist so active in helping their community. For the third year in a row, Killawatt Records artist HeatWave has helped coordinate the HeatWave Classic, an event based on promoting active and healthy kids and teenagers throughout Vancouver’s downtown eastside. The HeatWave Classic takes flight on July 23rd and will feature a basketball tournament, a concert, and a BBQ. The day-long block party takes place at Britannia Community Centre, which has been the venue for this event for the past two years; the 18-acre community center has provided great insight and help towards HeatWave and his team over the years. The event itself will be fully run by volunteers and students around the area who are willing to help and give back to the community.

HeatWave Classic

The first inspiration that sparked the HeatWave Classic was HeatWave’s love for basketball, which led him to play all the way though junior college in the US. Feeling a lack of opportunity for inner city children in the east side area, the HeatWave Classic was born. HeatWave currently resides in East Vancouver and told HipHopCanada that he feels it’s his duty to help the youth around him. Filled with passion and pride for his city, HeatWave wants to give Vancouver’s young artists and athletes a chance to show off their skills in sports and to feel a sense of cameraderie between each other. Being in the position he’s in, and able to put on events such as the HeatWave Classic, HeatWave hopes to inspire other people like him to do the same., and to help the youth of Vancouver in an even greater way as his success continues. He hopes to one day create scholarships, support kids travelling to colleges and basketball camps, and even more opportunities of that nature.

The concert is free of charge and will feature some of Vancouver’s best talent and biggest names, all of whom have agreed to perform as their part in giving back to Vancouver. The line-up includes the Grammy award-winning producer and artist Chin Injeti – who has worked with the likes of Eminem and Rihanna – as well as Kai Skywalker, who is actually co-signed by HeatWave. Despite recovering from a torn achilles tendon, fan favorite and “King of the V” Tre Nyce has also agreed to showcase his talents. Look out for The Iguanas, three young musicians who, in various incarnations, have played this event since its inception and are always lively and  impressive. HeatWave and his live band The Vandetta$ will be hitting the stage as well, giving the host a chance flex his MC skills with a stellar live band. Finally, DJ Flipout of the Beat 94.5 will be on hand as the official disc jockey of the day, playing all your favorites.

HeatWave invites you, your entire family, and all of your friends to join in on the festivities. On July 23rd, come down to the Britannia Community Centre, have some free food, vibe to the great music, and get involved with community support.

Amalia Judith was born in Winnipeg, MB and quickly whisked away to a childhood of travel throughout California, England, Germany and predominantly Pakistan. In 2006 she completed an honor's degree in English Literature, which left her quite jobless and alone in East Van. Amalia cut her teeth at abortmag.com, Canada's darkest counter-culture magazine, moving on to contribute words and flicks to HipHopCanada: she's currently the Western Canadian Editor and has had the privilege to interview hip-hop icons like Lil' Kim, Drake, Dead Prez, Big Boi, Pharrell Williams and half of Wu-Tang. Amalia also works as a Key Worker educator and advocate for families affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, as well as heading up Team Heartbreak, a media production company that pairs community involvement and artistic movements.
