JoThrillz [Prolific Profile]

Edmonton, ABJoThrillz is a rap artist based out of Edmonton who has found local success through his online videos. With over 10,000 subscribers, his fan base continues to grow from Edmonton to cross Canada. With his mixtape, The Gooniest, slated to drop soon, JoThrillz can’t wait to take his local success, nationwide. Check him out after the jump.

HipHopCanada: How do you define hip-hop, and where do you feel you fit into that definition?

JoThrillz: Hip Hop is music that moves your lower body.  It’s hard to explain, but easy to feel. I grew up with Hip Hop, it’s a part of me.

HipHopCanada: What drives you to stay in a business that is rarely profitable and highly competitive?

JoThrillz: Well since you put it that way… Music will always be my hobby. I don’t think I would continue making music if I didn’t have fun doing it and was focused on making money. That said, it would be really, really dope to make a career through my music.

HipHopCanada: Where are you based specifically?

JoThrillz: Edmonton, Alberta. Swag.

HipHopCanada: How has living there influenced your sound?

JoThrillz: Edmonton’s sweet, the city is a total mash up of almost every music genre. I went to an arts school and it had some of the craziest people I have ever seen. There was a guy who wore bubble wrap to school every day. I chilled with a lot of different people, who enjoyed a wide variety of music, all of which had a huge influence on the creation of my sound.

HipHopCanada: Who is your primary fan base?

JoThrillz: Who are the people that like Jo Thrillz? They are most likely 15- 30 years old. My music is my life and experiences I’ve had, and those closer to my age will find it easiest to relate. Specifically, most of my fans are the ones that have followed me on YouTube since I started posting videos online (2006). My local following also continues to grow, as I do more shows and parties. Right now is probably the most serious I have been about my music in my entire life. I have been grinding harder than ever.

HipHopCanada: What tips would you give young artists coming up, or what do you wish someone would have told you when you first started out in the hip-hop industry?

JoThrillz: Don’t hold back and don’t be afraid to show anyone your music.  Feedback from friends, family, or even people online is the best free resource available to you.

HipHopCanada: In which ways do you interact with your community?

JoThrillz: Number one, I am always attending local shows. It’s definitely the easiest way to network and get your name out locally. Number two, I am constantly checking youtube to see what other Edmonton artists are up to and what new music/videos they’re putting out. I also enter in most of the local freestyle rap battles. The battles keep the community tight and my mind sharp.

HipHopCanada: Which artists have you worked with that left an impression on you, and why?

JoThrillz: J Dats. He produces the majority of my music. The man is a machine. Period.

HipHopCanada: Which Canadian artist would you most like to collaborate with?

JoThrillz: Drake… That would be amazing. It would also be cool to work with Tory Lanez or D Pryde. They both made names for themselves through the internet and that really inspires me.

HipHopCanada: Tell us about past and present successes, as well as future projects?

JoThrillz: Hitting 10 000 subscribers on YouTube was big. It was a goal I had set when I first started posting videos.  It feels good to have built the fan base that I have now. Presently, I am trying to be in the studio as much as humanly possible. I got an album and a couple shows in the works, but I can’t spill the beans on any of that right now, but rest assured, moves are being made.

HipHopCanada: Any last words for the HipHopCanada online community?

JoThrillz: Expect to see and hear a lot more Jo Thrillz in the near future. I am “The Gooniest.” SAP!
