Spank Rock – Everything is Boring and Everyone if a F***ing Liar [Review]
Baltimore, MD – Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar is the latest electro dance album from West Baltimore hip-hop group Spank Rock. This is MC Spank Rock and producer’s XXXChange’s first full-length album since the 2006 effort Yoyoyoyoyo – known to profess distaste for record labels and the music industry, Spank Rock are undoubtedly one of underground’s rap new age leaders.
The album definitely has an alternative sound, with some rock, pop, electro and techno influences. It generally takes on the tone of a great party album, as well as complimenting that with a few more down to earth and laid-back tracks like “Baby”. Standing out on the album are the songs “Car Song” featuring Santigold, and “#1 Hit”. Both are extremely catchy and fun songs, which have potential to be major club dance tracks. Also notable is the bump-worthy track “Race Riot”, where the MC asks girls to “shake it ‘til my dick turns racist”.
While the album has great beats, dope production and smooth raps, the listener is left wondering more about MC Spank Rock himself. The lyrics are cool and go along with the general party theme of the record, but a more personal track or more insight to the artist’s self being would have been a great addition to this album.
Mainly located out of West Baltimore and Philadelphia, Spank Rock’s music is unlike most of the music out of the North. The way the group intertwines music genres is something often attempted, but rarely seen done well. However, alternative hip-hop is on the rise across Canada, so it won’t be surprising to see this type of music cross the border soon.
Spank Rock does a great job of gender bending hip-hop on this album. It’s very clear they set out to be different, and they do just that. If you are a fan of artistic and funky rap, Everything is Boring and Everyone is a Fucking Liar is for you.
