Chanté, Emery ‘make it work’: Singer-songwriter, NHLer ‘interested’ in marriage [News]

The Ottawa Citizen’s Alicja Sierkierska talks marriage between R&B singer Keshia Chanté and NHL goaltender, Ray Emery.

Ottawa, ON – For Keshia Chanté, life is a balancing act.

The 23-year-old singer-songwriter from Ottawa is constantly on the go, juggling a schedule that doesn’t just include performing songs of her recently released third album, titled Night and Day, but also modelling, acting and working as an ambassador for the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR).

Yet she still manages to find time to maintain a relationship with her boyfriend of almost two years, former Ottawa Senators goaltender Ray Emery.

“Our communication is key,” Chanté says. “Our understanding of where we want our relationship to go is always on the same page.”

Emery is with the Chicago Blackhawks this season. With Chanté living in Toronto and Emery based out of Chicago, and two busy and often conflicting schedules thrown in the mix, it might seem as if the couple would rarely find time to see each other.

“But we make it work,” Chanté says.

Before the start of the hockey season, Chanté and Emery looked at his schedule and circled the days they could spend together.

“Usually, I’m there when he’s home in Chicago, and I work while he’s away,” she says.

Chanté admits it’s a lot of travelling, but the direct flight from Toronto to Chicago lasts only 45 minutes.

When asked about their future, Chanté says:

“Marriage is definitely something we are interested in. It just follows our belief system.”

For now, though, Chanté wants to take her life one step at a time. Step one for the holidays is cooking Christmas dinner.

“I just moved into a new home in Toronto and I’ve invited my family and friends over for Christmas. It’s my first time cooking and hosting a big meal. Let’s hope it goes well!”

Emery will be there, too. The Blackhawks last played on Wednesday, and their next contest is in Chicago on Monday
