strong>Toronto, ON – As someone who communicates for a living, slang is something that always interests me: the way it evolves, the regional differences and how it crosses age and race barriers. On January 10th, Marlon Palmer (@ThatDudeMCFLY) created a YouTube video called “Shit Jamaican People Say.” The video features cuts of him dropping well-known slang terms usually heard coming from Jamaican people. Over 400,000 views later, he brough in @ItsMrLawson and @SlynkyDaSlyGuy for a new video titled “Shit Toronto People Say.” For those of us who live here, we sometimes forget that we do indeed have our own set of slang. Just travel 2 hours north of Toronto and you’ll notice a distinctly different vernacular. Or better yet, travel two hours south and you’ll notice an even bigger difference.

Exhibit A: During my recent trip to New York City, I met Meka of 2DopeBoyz.com. As we greeted him, someone dropped the all too common “What’re you sayin?” on Meka. Confused he did a double take, “What?” They responded by reverting to a greeting he’d be familiar with “What’s up bro?” Meka refused to let it go, insisting “No, no, what’d you say though?” We repeated the greeting to get a replay of his original confused look. He obviously wasn’t accustomed to hearing that particular slang.

You’ll notice in the below video that much of Toronto’s slang is West Indian influenced. But before you dismiss this as a rip-off of Palmer’s first video, consider the fact that you might walk down the street and hear this slang from people far from West-Indian and that is part of what makes Toronto’s slang interesting.
