Drake and Melanie Fiona pick up nominations at 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards [News]
Los Angeles, CA – If you’re not too busy taking part in the Canada Day festivities on July 1st, you can tune into the 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards which will be hosted by Samuel L. Jackson (that is, if the show is aired live). It all goes down inside L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium. So far Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown have confirmed they’ll be performing at the awards show which will also feature a Lifetime Achievement Award handed out to Frankie Beverly.
After taking the Rookie of the Year award in 2009 and then the MVP of the Year award in 2010, Drake left empty handed at the 2011 show. Luckily, he has 2 chances to redeem himself at the 2012 BET Hip-Hop Awards as he’s nominated in both the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice award categories. Toronto R&B singer Melanie Fiona finds herself in an incredibly competitive category up against Marsha Ambrosius, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna and Beyoncé for Best Female R&B Artist.
Drake’s single “The Motto” featuring Lil Wayne and Tyga is the Viewer’s Choice award nominee going up against the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye’s “Otis” off Watch The Throne and Chris Brown’s “Turn Up The Music.” Also nominated in the same category is Hov’s wife, Beyoncé, picking up another nomination with her “Love on Top” single and “Hello” by Mindless Behaviour. Last but not least, Wale’s “Lotus Flower Bomb” featuring Miguel is nominated in the same category.
Going up against Drake in the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist category is Big Sean, J. Cole, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Young Jeezy. In total, despite a surprising absence to the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist category, Kanye West leads the pack with seven nominations.
