Introducing a fresh new sound from Ottawa: DJ/producer CircaBeatz [Interview]
Ottawa, ON – HipHopCanada recently teamed up with I.D. Artisan to release the Y.N.T.I.D.Y. (You’re Nobody Till I Draw You) mixtape which was mixed by Ottawa DJ/producer CircaBeatz. CircaBeatz has been involved in music since a young age and is currently building a large portfolio of work with local artists.
He’s got a ton of projects in the works including a solo street release showcasing his work. Find out more about the DJ behind Y.N.T.I.D.Y. after the jump.
HipHopCanada: When were you first introduced to music?
CircaBeatz: I was first introduced to music in the church I grew up in back in Montreal . My father who played a number of different instruments taught me to play the drums at the age of four about an hour before one of the Sunday services. After a crash course I played for over 1,000 people that same day. My uncle who was a DJ and who always had the latest records to play on his radio, taught me the DJ side of what I do.
HipHopCanada: When did you move to Ottawa?
CircaBeatz: I moved to Ottawa at the age of ten, and the same night I was flipping through channels on the radio to find any kind of hip-hop and found a show on CKCU (Carleton University) called “The Peaceful Journey” with DJ Ducats, and I was like this show is hype. I’ve been listening to it ever since.
HipHopCanada: Why did you choose the name circa beatz or was it given to you?
CircaBeatz: In high school I would mix tracks at sports games (no turntables, just switching from CD to CD) to keep the crowd hype and cheering for the home team. On the first day I mixed I was wearing all circa gear, and after that they started to call me DJ Circa.
I changed my name to CircaBeatz when I started making beats.
HipHopCanada: Who have you produced for and what projects have you involved in?
CircaBeatz: I have produced for artists such as Cashtro Crosby, C-Squeezy, Robin Spree, Crooked Logic, 9_4, Coogi Carter, and a couple more.
I have production on about 5 or 6 mixtapes, including mixing and hosting tapes from Bigg Ceaser, I.D. Artisan, Gutta Pham, and even HipHopCanada.
HipHopCanada: How did you get involved in radio?
CircaBeatz: I was the feature DJ on the Cypher Show with DJ SoNice one Friday. The feedback was so good that I was called back and eventually became a regular.
From that, me and DJ SoNice formed a Beat making duo called Qualified Pros.
HipHopCanada: When can people tune into the Cypher Show?
CircaBeatz: They can tune in every Friday from 9 to11 on CHUO 89.1 FM.
HipHopCanada: What artistsor DJ influenced you along the way?
CircaBeatz: The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff were a big influence on me.
The first album I ever heard was their 1987 hip-hop classic Rock Da House. Now more of my influences come from the 90’s (Notorious B.I.G. Gangstarr, Nas, Das Efx, 90’s Jay-Z)
HipHopCanada: Do you play any other instruments besides the drums?
CircaBeatz: I can play piano, guitar, steel pan, and at least 40 other instruments (all by ear).
HipHopCanada: What can we expect from CircaBeatz in the future?
CircaBeatz: I`m currently mixing a couple of mixtapes, and going real hard with the solo and group production as well as special projects with I.D. Artisan, R&B producer Goldstripes, 9_4 and also a CircaBeatz street album.
HipHopCanada: Where can people get in touch with you for your production and mixing services or hear your beats?
