Ryda: Q&A

HipHopCanada: How do you define hip-hop, and where do you feel you fit into that definition?

Ryda: Hip-hop is like poetry. It’s whatevers real to that artist. We all come from different upbringings and grew up on different types of music. The artists that are real with theirselves usually have better music, that true hip-hop and I speak off my own life experiences so the hip-hop you hear from me is what’s real to me, real music.

HipHopCanada: What drives you to stay in a business that is rarely profitable and highly competitive?

Ryda: For the love of the music. Loyal 2Da Game, that’s what my mixtapes called. I’m loyal to it because we put a lot into it for years… we have with Yay Billz, then G.C.P, and now with LP Ent. We’re still working hard and we do a lot of other things behind the scenes. I’m not just a rapper: we make money. There’s no point of doing anything unless money is involved. We might not have sold records yet or anything like that, but we’re on our grind. We ain’t sleeping. We’re the sickest: no one is doing it like us out here.

HipHopCanada: Where are you based specifically?

Ryda: Toronto, anywhere in between Martingrove and Morningside.

HipHopCanada: How has living there influenced your sound?

Ryda: I’m from North Scarborough. It influenced my content maybe but my sound is more unique. I don’t really think anything influenced my sound. I always kinda talked a little different because my moms is Jamaican and my dad is Guyanese. I’m from Toronto and I spent a lot of my childhood Summers in the States. Plus, the hood where I was raised, we just had our own little slang so I guess that’s where my sound comes from.

HipHopCanada: Who is your primary fan base?

Ryda: Right now, I couldn’t even tell you. I’m still feeling out everything. When I start releasing some of this music I have, then I’ll have a better idea.

HipHopCanada: What tips would you give young artists coming up, or what do you wish someone would have told you when you first started out in the hip-hop industry?

Ryda: Don’t wait, cause you never know what could happen and you never know when your time will come. But you won’t know unless you just do it.

HipHopCanada: In which ways do you interact with your community?

Ryda: I am the community.

HipHopCanada: Which artists have you worked with that left an impression on you, and why?

Ryda: No one really. Maybe Random Act. We both started working with GCP around the same times. Me, I let other people make decisions for me and just kinda sat in the backseat. Never got to get Yay Bills off the way I wanted. Random Act just did what the they wanted. I was a little bit younger than them but thats my whole mentality right now. I worked with a few other known artists in the city but no major features yet.

HipHopCanada: Which Canadian artist would you most like to collaborate with?

Ryda: The Weeknd, him or Drake. No one else even matters because no one is making music like me and Jixx out here. We’re going to change the sound.

HipHopCanada: Tell us about past and present successes, as well as future projects?

Ryda: Nothing really to brag about cause I’m still getting started but I dropped Ryda 1.0 and maybe sold like a thousand or so copies around Toronto, Montreal, Halifax mainly. But that was with no promotion. Loyal 2Da Game is the first big mixtape I’ve dropped as a free download cause I want everyone to hear that it’s huge.

HipHopCanada: Any last words for the HipHopCanada online community?

Ryda: Loyal 2Da Game the mixtape is available for free download on HipHopCanada so make sure you take that in. It’s going to be the heaviest Canadian mixtape to drop this year, my word.
