Mayne Ishu: Biography

Welcome to music’s newest and most important issue “its MAYNE ISHU” so to speak. Born on May 25, 1988 and raised in a strict Rastafarian family, recording artist Mayne Ishu combines the unique island sound of reggae music, the flare and swagger of hip-hop and the catchy nature of pop to not only make his listeners stop and think about the lyrical message but to also spend some time on the dance floor going wild.

At age seven he began writing poetry, and shortly after learned how to put these poems into lyrics written over hip hop and reggae beats. At the age of fifteen he began recording alongside his longtime friend, producer King D, and quickly developed a unique flow and sound that few could match. In 2008, he joined forces with a new team, Living Proof, and has done nothing but amazing things since. Now 22, he has already had radio play success with “Hit Me Back” (which received air play on both Flow 93.5 in Toronto and WBLK 93.7 in Buffalo), had music video rotation on both Much Music and MTV2 with his single “Hold it Up” and has performed in front of live crowds, bringing the audience to their feet.

During the summer of 2008 he flooded the streets of Toronto with the release of his first promotional mixtape “The Warning”. The mixtape was hosted by famed Toronto DJ crew “Ill Kidz”.

“The Warning” was quickly followed up by the August 1, 2008 release of “The Warning…Part 2”.

“Got What You Need” was released independently in November of 2009 and features the aforementioned “Hold it Up”, which features the vocals of renowned reggae artist Everton Blender, as well as two other singles, “Don’t Worry” and “Fresh”. “Don’t Worry” also includes a video, and a video for “Fresh” is forthcoming. Videos have also been released for tracks “Who You Know” and “We Got This”.

In 2010, he released a new mixtape titled “Topic of Discussion”. Hosted by New York DJ crew A.I Productions, it is available on all major online mixtape sites, including, and Coast 2 to Coast mixtapes. Currently Mayne Ishu is wrapping up a fresh new release for the holiday season. He reached out to up & coming producers to help make his upcoming release possible.
