#SOTD | SD the Scholar – Soul Searching [Video/MP3]
Ottawa, ON – Ottawa-based artist SD the Scholar, formerly known as S. Dizzy, has contrasted his subtle yet passionate presence with bold visuals for the release of his new song “Soul Searching.” As a part of the F.L.Y.E.R.S crew, which actually stands for Free Living Youth Embracing Real Soul, SD the Scholar thrives equally on knowledge of the world and knowledge of self. The video, which is directed by Jason Matos, reveals an intimate visual landscape to discuss the hardships of coming into one’s own while living in an intimidating society that pulls and pushes youth in every direction. Matos, who has both a strong local and international clientele and has had his work appear on BET, BBC and MTV India and Asia respectively, captivates the strength of SD the Scholar’s lyrics by primarily using a black backdrop and mirroring SD’s physical image throughout the video, allowing the power of his lyrics to shine both figuratively and metaphorically.
“Soul Searching,” which is produced by Toronto’s Sol’ Kidd, not only speaks of staying true to oneself, it also acts as a reflection of the music industry and sheds a conscious light on the state of hip-hop music. SD unapologetically rhymes, “When you reach your goals, you gotta keep your soul in it” and presents the notion of living free of any restraints. SD’s lyrics channel themselves away from rap trends and promote positivity while maintaining the spirit of street music. Throughout the 4-minute video, SD manages to captivate listeners lyrically, but also manages to present himself as a “scholar of his own mind” and a very passionate and strong-minded emcee.
SD the Scholar’s debut LP The Soul Project is due to be released at the end of August 2012. “Soul Searching” is HipHopCanada’s Song of the Day.
