The rebirth of Tika Simone’s Known (Un)known on November 11 [News]

Toronto, ON – This coming Sunday, November 11th marks the return of The Known (Un)Known, a monthly event series founded in 2009 by Toronto native Tika Simone. The events were put on hold in 2011 to be re-branded and now they are back with a twist: a reality web series called “Behind The Known Unknown” that documents the show’s process.

The event portion is an audition-only urban showcase that supports and uplifts local talent within the city of Toronto. Founder Tika Simone spoke with HipHopCanada about the event series, and told us the meaning behind it and how it has changed over time. “The purpose of The Known (Un)known was originally to prove that Toronto is more than capable of supporting their own. It has now evolved completely. We embody the idea of presenting unknown artists within our city, who happen to be known to smaller crowds of people, a platform to present their artistry to a live audience. Eventually allowing them to be known not just in their own backyard but elsewhere. We don’t believe in cliques. We believe in good music & supporting one another.”

The November 11th show will feature performances from headliners JellyTooFly and Derek Wi$e, as well as live performances from Adria Kain, Sean Leon, L.A.Y, Brookie, SchoolyB, Savannah Re & Tamara Madison, Juvon (Jay Tee) Taylor and Ablyss. Music will be provided by DJ Lissa Monet. Check out the flyer after the jump for more information and check out the commercial for “Behind The Known Unknown.”

Natasha was born and raised in Toronto. She graduated from York University almost 2 years ago and since then has co-founded a youth led, social enterprise called The Next Edition which uses media and art to engage youth with their community. For the past year and a half she has been working with young aspiring artists who are looking for a way to showcase their skills and have their voice heard. With juggling weekly meetings, managing a website, and planning events for hundreds of people Natasha takes refuge in urban music. Researching and knowing the latest headlines, and newest tracks in the hip-hop world is something that she loves. But more importantly for her hip-hop is a lot more than just a genre of music, it is a culture and it has shaped who she is today. Finding a way to combine her passion for music, the knowledge she has gained from working with young people and the issues she has seen in the community is a goal Natasha would like to achieve in the near future. Recently, Natasha has taken on PR work for rappers and DJs.
