CJ Atwal battles cancer while chasing hip-hop dream [Article]

Mississauga, ON – Mississauga musician CJ Atwal may personify Superman in a few lines of his debut single, I’m So Witty, but one could argue the 28-year-old bears more resemblance to the Man of Steel’s alter ego, Clark Kent.

Just like mild-mannered journalist Kent, Atwal, whose video will debut on hip-pop culture website GlobalGrind.com next month, also had a secret.

While working tirelessly on his craft and networking with hip-hop industry heavyweights such as Russell Simmons, P. Diddy and Drake by night, Atwal was quietly undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.

“I told my wife and my family, but nobody else,” said Atwal. “I didn’t want to be looked at as a charity case.

“I wanted to go through (the illness) being me, partying all the way, giving it my all and seeing where it goes.”

In late 2010, when faced with his diagnosis, Atwal made the decision to stop working as a personal trainer in the GTA.
