The Freestylimpics bring battle, creativity and community collaboration to the foreground, with emcees duking it out freestyle for pride and prizes on March 23, 2013 at 8:00pm at the National Music Centre. Organized in a cooperative effort by local crews ContraVerse and Jazzlib Collective.

Calgary’s underground Hip Hop scene has finally begun to surface, and those in tune with goings on have had their eyes opened at the strength, talent, and community presence across the city.
The vision for this event will be to draw together contrasting genres of the emcee community while awarding skill and celebrating diversity.

Hosted by the dedicated local Calgary hip hop MC pioneer Teekay from Dragon Fli Empire, and fresh face MC Jaynova, these hosts will guide competitors through various categories to test the depth of local emcee’s skill sets in freestyle:
1)7 to smoke – Individual head to head battles 2)Creativity Jam – Individual artistic improv rap 3)Main Event – Crew Battle – ContraVerse vs. Jazzlib Collective

To break up the competition, visual art, DJs, and B-Boys/B-Gurls will represent their art forms as part of the night’s entertainment. To kick things up one more notch, local emcee and spoken word poet Sabo Forte will join the judges in showcasing their talents.

Judges include the always innovative veteran Ricca Razorsharp (Blades of Steel), co- founder/co-organizer of 10 at 10 RS Poe, and local MC turned poetic artist educator Pleasant. The long-term vision is quarterly events with a large crew battle once a year. Other art forms will eventually join the battle components to create events with cross-genre competition and noteworthy awards for local talent.

Sponsors for this event include Hip-Hop For Humanity, the Calgary Gymnastics Centre, Subway, HipHopCanada and The Athlete Factory. Additionally, competitors will compete for studio time at Brotherman Studios and exclusive rights to beats by Harm Productions. If your need some more info, check the Freestylimpics Facebook page here.
