Hip-Hop Karaoke Comes to Calgary [News]
Calgary, AB – On Monday Mar. 25, Commonwealth Bar & Stage brings Calgarians the first installation of its new weekly Hip-Hop Karaoke (HHK) night. Hosted by DJ Cosm, Josh “Apeface ” Mandrake, and Metawon, HHK gives MC-wannabes and hip-hop fanatics a chance to drop it like Dre while scoping out Calgary’s up-and-coming hip-hoppers. “HHK is for everyone— from the MC trying to get his name out there to the average Joe or Jane who’s been rapping Biggie songs in the shower,” said Colin Canning, marketing manager for Commonwealth Bar & Stage.
“I think it will bring out a wide variety of people, and maybe that will help unite all the hip hop fans in Calgary.”
The idea for HHK came from Mandrake, who recently moved back to Calgary after a brief stint in Vancouver. After becoming a regular at Fortune Sound Club’s HHK in Vancouver, Mandrake thought that HHK would be a great fit for Commonwealth. He reached out to the bar’s management through DJ Cosm and received an eager response. “[Mandrake’s] enthusiasm for it was so infectious, we literally decided on the spot, to get it started,” said Canning.
HHK starts at 10 p.m. every Monday, with a cover charge of $5. Performers must register beforehand by sending their name and song choice to HHK@commonwealthbar.ca. This gives Apeface and DJ Cosm time to track down the instrumentals and get lyric sheets prepared. Throughout the evening, sets of four or five performers will show every 15 – 20 minutes, with the DJ spinning in between to keep the audience bumping-and-grinding. “It’s all about the music, friends and good times,” said Canning. “You can just come, enjoy the party and support your friends who are living their 8 Mile dreams.”
And just in case you can’t decide which song to sing, HipHopCanada caught up with DJ Cosm to find out which songs he’d like to see performed at HHK.
