DKay – Early Bird Gets The World [Review]
Vancouver, BC – When an up-and-comer like DKay, who’s in the early stages of the rap game, steps up into the Vancity scene with a memorable sound and a whole lot of hustle, it’s something to take notice of.
Hailing from Calgary, Alberta this fresh-faced rapper has been taking the West Coast by storm since he moved to Vancouver in 2011. Originally making his mark in the electro/pop genre, DKay is now focused on his grind as an emcee releasing his sophomore EP Early Bird Gets The World in late July.
Early Bird is a hyphy five-song collection; every track goes hard lyrically contrasting with DKay’s signature laid back flow. The first cut “D’jango” features Vancity fav HeatWave, who adds the right dose of bad-boy flavor to the paper-chasing anthem. “Whiteboy Wasted” shows off DKay’s clever lyrical skills with a beat and hook that are infectious and hard to forget.
“Stacking the green, I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout the Cee Lo/ Super bad bitch but I keep her on the d’low/ Boy, I’m in the club takin’ shots like a free throw.”
If you’re looking for that new shit to replace “Rack City” on your Party Time playlist, this is it – move over Tyga.
“That Chick” has a low-down trill vibe over another bangin’ beat, giving it the potential to make chicks want him and dudes want to be him while “Grindin’” has an R&B essence on the hook, making it a track that’s easier to move to. For a young cat this fresh, his transitions are on point, beats are hot and his flow has the right amount of appeal. DKay has definite star quality, so do yourself a favor, cop the album and be on the lookout for predicted big things to come.
