Kayo announces upcoming EP & national tour [News]
Halifax, NS - St. Lucia born, Halifax-based rapper Kayo Guevarra (né Filbert Salton) has just announced that he’ll release the highly anticipated EP S.L.A.V.E (Serenity Lives Around Virtuous Energy) on September 10th via Toronto based indie label, Black Box.
In addition, Kayo revealed that he will be kicking off a 13-date national tour alongside Chali 2na, member of the seminal hip hop group Jurassic 5 in Vancouver on September 12th. The cross-Canadian run includes stops in Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, London, Toronto and Ottawa, finishing strong in Montreal. Throughout this exciting chapter in his career Kayo’s goal is to keep his ambitions simple, yet profound; “To find myself, to not lose myself, and to not lose what makes me happy.”
Having begun his career as a teenager in St. Lucia performing with local jazz bands and collaborating with Soca and dancehall artists, Kayo soon realized that “there really wasn’t an audience” for hip hop in the Caribbean. Inspired by Bob Marley, Wyclef Jean, 2Pac, and Jay-Z, Kayo’s ambitious repertoire and world class aspirations eventually led to his decision to move to Halifax where he immersed himself in the local hip hop scene and later met future mentor; Classified.

Recorded in Halifax between tours earlier this year, S.L.A.V.E. chronicles the highs and lows of Kayo’s last two years in the music industry – struggling to find his place in the North American hip hop scene, his relationship with Canadian rap icon Classified and his former label team. Ultimately, it tells the story of Kayo; an artist that has stepped out independently to make the next move in his career.
Equally impactful from conception to execution, the EP track list is as much a result of Kayo’s new-found Canadian connections as it is a reflection of his homeland. The nine song collection that makes up S.L.A.V.E. includes appearances by Quake, Cam Smith and features the production of Kayo’s long-time collaborator and fellow St. Lucian, Yogi Da Producer.
The video for the lead single “Don’t Bring Me Down” is set to drop later this month.
