Vancouver’s Safe Amplification [Article]
Vancouver, BC – In a city like Vancouver, where bands and groups consistently tour through and a large part of the culture involves heading to the bar or club to see your favourite act, all-ages venues are noticeably scarce. One group that’s working to create safe, drug and alcohol-free environments for the city’s youth is Safe Amp, a non-profit organization that works hard from both musical and political platforms in order to make music accessible to people of all ages. HipHopCanada crossed paths with SafeAmp when we partnered on a ticket giveaway for the all-ages Machine Gun Kelly show at the Vogue Theatre – simply tag MGKVan in a tweet or on Facebook and you’re entered – and they piqued our interest, so we asked director Kirsten Aubrey a feed questions.
HipHopCanada: How does Safe Amp run as an organization?
Safe Amp: Our space has been realized through the strength of the local music scene and volunteerism. Having faced the challenges of on-going closures of live music venues and the constant threat to cultural spaces, we took it on ourselves to attempt to create a fully legal, permanent all ages venue.
HipHopCanada: What’s the process for that?
Safe Amp: We have taken several steps to obtaining our goal which include the sub-lease of a temporary venue (Astorinos) so we can throw shows. Also by creating partnerships and alliances in the community, obtaining funds through fundraisers (internally and externally organized) and sticking to our principals which includes policies on inclusivity, accessibility and no alcohol/substance use.
HipHopCanada: Do you book many all-ages hip-hop shows?
Safe Amp: Shows are booked by members and we are open to any genre of music. We have had several hip-hop shows thrown by local artists, that have been really fun!
HipHopCanada: How can supporters find you online?
Safe Amp: Here are some links to our organization:
