Xolisa – A Beautiful Mind EP [Review]

Toronto, ON – On Dec. 4, 2013, Toronto based musician Xolisa released her debut EP entitled A Beautiful Mind. After listening to all five tracks, one cannot help but be amazed. Xolisa produced every track on the EP, and all but one of them was written by her. From start to finish, she shows off her extraordinary talents, as each track boasts strong vocals, well-produced beats and lyrical excellence.

Xolisa - A Beautiful Mind EP [Review] -

On the opening title track, “A Beautiful Mind,” Xolisa really gives her listeners the sense that they are in for something special. There is no typical introduction, so there’s no waiting in finding out what the young talent has to offer, which is exorbitant amounts of confidence. Xolisa raps with a certain swagger that really sticks with the listener. Alongside that confidence, one might confuse Xolisa for a seasoned vet, rather than the newcomer on the scene that she is.

The second song, “Borderlines,” is one that shows Xolisa’s true talents as a songwriter. While all of the tracks consist of strong lyrics, “Borderlines” in particular takes songwriting to a whole other level. The line, “When it rains it tends to pour, so I prepare for the coming of the storm,” is one of many that demonstrates the artist’s ability to rhyme and flow with the best of them. Between the personal reflection in the chorus and her great verses, “Borderlines” is easily this writer’s favourite cut on the EP.

“On Love,” written by Kahlil Gibran, offers a great reflection of Xolisa’s true versatility as an artist. Gibran did a fantastic job writing this, as the lyrics are downright beautiful and can speak to pretty much anyone. “On Love” proves that Xolisa is capable of so much as an artist, as even when she is speaking to her listeners she maintains a perfect flow.

“Indigo” is the most well-produced song on the EP. As soon as the listener hears the beat, they’ll know they’re in for a treat. However, having a great beat only means something if you can’t rap over it; thankfully Xolisa can, and with ease. The final song on the EP is an outro track called “A Beautiful Moment.” There are no lyrics to the song; instead, just a smooth instrumental to let the EP ride out. This was a great choice to end off with, as the soft outro is the perfect way to sooth the listener after four tracks of musical gold.

Xolisa has an abundance of talent, and it is clearly on display throughout the EP. All in all, the young artist uses A Beautiful Mind to prove she’s ready to bring her career to the next level. We’ll certainly be keeping an eye out to see what she comes with next.
