So if you are a true Stones Throw head; the kind that wants to know every detail of the label to the depth of what color Quasimoto shit is? Go see this film and by the time your done watching you’ll know the inside story of Peanut Butter and Charizma, how Stones Throw got started, How J Dilla and Madlib connected in the D, how Peanut Butter Wolf wanted to make sure that Guilty Simpson didn’t change a thing when he joined the label, how (and where) Madvillain was made and most important question on very person’s mind now days… Who the hell is Folerio?!
Stones Throw fans will be able to tell that Jeff Broadway really understood the essence of the label as he chopped footage as masterfully as J Dilla or Madlib would chop samples. The end result is a visual orgasm of never before seen footage with people like A-Trak, Kanye West, Common, ?uestlove (The Roots), Talib Kweli, House Shoes and Flying Lotus, all giving on camera confessional of their Stones Throw allegiance.
When asked about why he was drawn to do a film on Stones Throw? Director Jeff Broadway replied: “I grew up listening to a lot of hip-hop. As a teenager, when I discovered Madlib, Doom and Dilla, I felt like I’d discovered an entirely different type of music, and aesthetic. The world of Stones Throw that those artists PBW and Jeff Jank have cultivated, transcends music. It’s a culture which possesses its own unique ethos. As a fan and a filmmaker, I felt I wasn’t alone in wanting to dig deeper into that world. I think Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton accomplishes that.”
