Smoke DZA speaks with Billboard and performs a new song [Video]
New York, NY – There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to Smoke DZA. The rapper and R.F.C. Music Group label head has been in the game for over a decade, and his personal journey has been one to marvel at. On his upcoming album, Dream.ZONE.Achieve, DZA breaks down his sonic excursion into three acts.
“It’s different. It’s not pot-related. It’s about my journey,” he says. “‘Dream’ was my inspiration and actually thinking about doing it. ‘Zone’ was the hustle in this music industry, being from the street, and trying to transform. ‘Achieve’ is basking in all the glory; It’s where I’m at right now.”
While some battle to claim the title of “King of New York,” Smoke DZA chooses to influence hip-hop fans beyond the borders of the Big Apple. “All that shit is propaganda. We’re not talking about the Jay Z’s and the rap royalty of the game; We’re talking about the young guys. All that shit is propaganda,” DZA says, passionately. “Before the New York thing got trendy, I was a New York artist. I didn’t switch to trap. I didn’t none of that funny shit. If I did it, I did it the way I wanted to do it. It’s more than just being a New York artist in New York City. Go out of New York City and do that and then say what you want to say that.”
