Smoke DZA: Dreams, Zones & Achieves at Iron Mic in Edmonton [Photos] #IronMic
Edmonton, AB – On Apr. 19, our friends over at Pearl Entertainment rolled out the first – ever – installation of the Iron Mic Music Festival. Western Canada’s largest indoor hip-hop music festival brought hip-hop heavyweights Smoke DZA, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Ghostface Killah, and MGK together on one bill for a night of supreme hip-hoppity goodness.
Of the five international headliners to grace us with their presence, Harlem’s own Smoke DZA was first on the roster for the evening. Following the local Edmonton opening sets, Smoke hit the stage at 7 p.m.
Smoke’s been on the scene for a minute, now. He came up as a battle-rapper, delved into ghost-writing for a while, dropped a slew of Mary Jane-laced tapes, and finally dropped his debut Dream.ZONE.Achieve album at the beginning of April 2014 (Spoiler alert: that’s where the “DZA” in “Smoke DZA” comes from: dream, zone, achieve. ‘Na mean?).
Smoke hit the stage running in a Mark Messier Edmonton Oilers jersey (with matching sneakers, which is equally important – you feel me?). So basically, he instantly became the coolest new cat on the E-Town block. Smoke had everyone wilding out within minutes. He brought that Beast Coast flavour to Western Canada, and everyone was feeling the love. At the end of the set, Smoke brought the next headliner of the evening – Joey Bada$$ – on to the stage to perform the duo’s “Fhvt BVsturd” joint off Dream.ZONE.Achieve. It was a beastly Beast Coast takeover.
In a recent interview with Vlad TV, Smoke DZA lay claim to being the best rapper in New York. To quote, he said: “In the crop of what’s going on right now, I’m the best. I got the best album out. Best rapper. Best dressed. Smell better than these n*ggas. All of that.”
So y’all want to know what the best rapper in New York smells like? Of course you do. He’s on that Tom Ford ish. But more on that later. Keep it locked. You can peep all the details when we drop the interview that we did with the great Dream Zone Achiever, himself. In the meanwhile, check out these photos that Sarah Sussman shot of Smoke DZA’s monstrous debut Edmonton performance below.
