Toronto-based Nova Scotian MC Murda Marz killed in shooting [News]
Toronto, ON – The Toronto hip-hop scene is in mourning today as up-and-coming rapper Shmar Parris (aka Murda Marz) was confirmed as the city’s latest homicide victim.
Police have reported that Marz was killed early Friday morning after gunfire erupted in downtown Toronto and ended with a brief car chase near Ryerson University. Around 2:20 a.m. a Chevrolet Malibu, believed to contain Marz and two other passengers, was shot multiple times before it sped off and crashed into a light pole. Marz was then transported to a nearby hospital where the Nova Scotian MC and filmmaker with ties to Regent Park was pronounced dead.
Most recently Marz had appeared on the popular new Roney mixtape, Don’t Sleep Volume 3, and had also made regular appearances on the Canadian Kush mixtape series. He had released a video in May 2012 called “Street Nigga,” which celebrated his North Preston, Nova Scotia roots and had released a big collaboration with Halifax JUNO Award-winning singer, JRDN, a couple of years earlier. You can check out “Broken” below. According to reports, Marz and JRDN had recently received a MuchFACT grant to produce a new music video. It’s unclear if it will be released. JRDN tweeted out an RIP earlier in the day.
Friends and colleagues of the rapper have been on social media since early Friday to express their grief. The CBC first reported on the tragedy this morning at 6:14 ET. More information can be found on local Toronto news.
HipHopCanada would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Parris family during this trying time. #RIP
