Drake, SonReal lead 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards nominations [News]
Toronto, ON – Originally published May 21, 2014 – Toronto’s Drake and Vancouver’s SonReal have received a combined 11 nominations for the 25th anniversary of the MuchMusic Video Awards. Drake’s 6 nominations ties him with rockers Hedley for most nominations this year while SonReal’s 5 nominations have him coming in second – HUGE news for the West coast rapper!
Drake had the edge on SonReal back in March as the pair went up against each other at the JUNOs in the Rap Recording of the Year category. While Drake is likely still considered the favourite by most industry analysts, SonReal’s Napolean Dynamite inspired “Everywhere We Go” (Dir. Mad Ruk Ent.) video has done huge things for the young artist’s career and this exposure will only further that. Win or lose, being nominated in the Video of the Year category by the country’s biggest music video network is nothing to scoff at.
With six nominations in total, Drake is up for Video of the Year, Director of the Year, Hip Hop Video of the Year, International Video of the Year by a Canadian, Your Fave Video (twice), and Your Fave Artist or Group. SonReal also grabbed a nomination in the Your Fave Video category along with Video of the Year, Director of the Year, MuchFACT Video of the Year, and Hip Hop Video of the Year.
The other Hip Hop Video of the Year category nominees include P. Reign’s “We Them” featuring A$AP Rocky, D-Sisive’s “Friend of Mine” (Dir. Briin “Briin?” Bernstein & Daniel AM Rosenberg) and Classified’s “Higher” (Dir. RT!) featuring B.o.B.
Several other hip-hop related nominations should be mentioned including 3 for Thugli (DJ Drastik & Tom Wrecks) for the catchy “Run This.” Alternative R&B star The Weeknd picked up 4 nominations, tied with Grammy winners Arcade Fire. A Tribe Called Red was nominated in the Dance Video of the Year category for “Sisters” featuring Northern Voice and Keys N Krates were given a nod for “Dum Dee Dum.” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis received a nomination in the International Video of the Year – Group category for “White Walls” featuring ScHoolboy Q and Hollis, and Pharrell Williams picked up a nomination for “Happy” in International Video of the Year – Artist. Lastly, we can’t forget to mention “Chills” was nominated in the Pop Video of the Year category. Of course, Down With Webster wouldn’t be the same without the contributions of resident rappers Camm Hunter and Bucky. Congrats to all the nominees!
This year’s show will be line on June 15 at 9 p.m. ET on MuchMusic, CTV and CTV Go and is being co-hosted, for some reason, by Kendall and Kylie Jenner – surely to be as memorable as LL Cool J hosting the Grammy Awards back in January.
