Hip Hop Karaoke MTL returns this Saturday, July 11, inside Le Belmont [News]

Montreal, QCHip Hop Karaoke Montreal (HHKMTL) is kickin’ off its first show of the summer with an R&B edition this Saturday, July 12, lining up the evening set list with smooth, classic jams of the golden era.

This special R&B edition, deviating from HHK’s rap-centric manifesto, will also incorporate special collaborations with local event Chocolate Jungle, already a Montreal nightlife staple in less than a year, dedicated to the conservation of hip-hop culture and community by way of hypnotic tracks, eccentric fashion and impressive dance choreography.

In other news, with HHKMTL shifting to Saturday evening (as opposed to its traditional Thursday nights), the show’s organizers are expecting a shift in the standard audience demographic, with working folk enjoying their weekend groove by staying out later and partying harder. In addition, HHKMTL will no longer remain a monthly soirée, but rather an intermittent event with emphasis on collaboration with other local events.

As usual, the one and only DShade will be hosting the upcoming festivities, and Fool’s Gold Records’ DJ Shash’U will be on the turntables heating up the night! HHKMTL starts things off with this summer kickoff event on July 12 at The Belmont (4483 St. Laurent). Doors will open at 10 p.m. Cover is $5 before 11 p.m. and $10 thereafter. More info after the jump.

To spice things up even more, HHKMTL has partnered up with budding new shoe line NATIVE, and will be giving away the hottest summer styles throughought the night. As the the Vancouver’s Aleesha Harris wrote back in March, Vancouver’s Native Shoes have firmly stomped its unique thermoplastic footprint on the shoe industry. The company, which debuted in 2009, has carved out a niche for itself in the proverbial shoe closet among companies such as Vans and Crocs, leaving an almost cultlike following in its wake.

About Hip Hop Karaoke Montreal

Hip Hop Karaoke Montreal is an event celebrating hip hop music in an entertaining, collaborative, and inclusive environment. This event is not only for hip hop lovers, but also for people seeking a unique, cultural nightlife experience in Montreal.

Hip Hop Karaoke Montreal (HHKMTL) has been in existence for almost three years now, and aims to pay homage to the most celebrated rap icons by inviting performers to mimic their favorite rappers in a non-traditional karaoke fashion. The distinction between HHKMTL and other Karaoke nights lies in the prohibition of reading lyrics off a teleprompter. That's right: HHKMTL performers get on stage and memorize their tracks, ultimately yielding an energy-packed, dynamic, fun-loving evening.

In almost three years, HHKMTL has become a movement, garnering media attention from CBC, The Montreal Gazette, Le Devoir, 94.7 hits FM, Nightlife Magazine, Camuz, Journal Metro and countless other outlets. described the event as, “Warm, supportive, [and] encouraging ... the energy was infectious.”

2013 was a year of reinvention for HHKMTL, introducing such aspects as a live trivia segment, specially catered Biscuits & BBQ, a new line of merchandise and fresh graphic designs on visual materials. This past year, HHKMTL has also partnered up with Concordia University, McGill University, the Montreal Hip Hop Festival, the Just For Laughs Festival, Under Pressure and other local Montreal events.

This upcoming year of 2014 is looking like the best one yet, as HHKMTL anticipates a rebranding involving new graphic designs, structural changes to the event and some very exciting new collaborations.
