Move Right Music: Providing service to Canada’s emerging talent [Interview]

Vancouver, BCOriginally published July 21, 2014 – If you pay attention to what’s going on in the music underground you’ll notice that there is certainly no shortage of grinding, up-and-coming Canadian artists; the number of them actually seems to keep increasing on the daily. Anyone who knows anything about the music biz knows that a single artist is rarely successful without the backing of a label or at least a small team of knowledgeable peeps to grind for them from all angles.

Move Right Music is a brand-new, Vancouver based label, headed by Classified’s former manager Craig MacMillan. MRM’s goal is to provide a full-service, one-stop shop to help with all paths of that music grind. Craig’s credentials don’t stop with Classified either. He’s been in the game for over 10 years and has developed a keen eye for up-and-coming talent.

We sat down with MacMillan to discuss his new venture into label ownership as well as what he’s looking for when he signs a new artist. Pay attention, this is a group of individuals who should definitely be on your radar as a grinding artist and as a fan of fresh, raw talent. Peep our interview below.

Craig MacMillan (Move Right Music): Q&A

Written by KassKills for HipHopCanada

HipHopCanada: What types of services can Move Right provide for artists?

Craig MacMillan: The basis of the business is a full service label. We specialize in providing experienced feedback, and knowledge from a team that has been there and done it in the industry. The primary services that we provide are marketing, consulting and offering digital distribution. We will work, and establish an honest relationship with artists to reach the common goal that we agree on while exploring different revenue stream options along the way.

HipHopCanada: How many members of the Move Right team?

Craig MacMillan: Right now it’s myself, a silent partner and a few interns that are on standby ready to get to work on your project !

HipHopCanada: What kind of music experience do you have?

Craig MacMillan: As far as the music industry goes I have over 10 years in the game. I started doing parties and club events while living in Whistler. The events gradually got bigger and bigger booking shows for the likes or De La Soul, Souls OF Mischief, DEL, DJ Craze, Qbert etc. During that time frame is when I also met Classified and DL Incognito. I started to work with Class in ’06 eventually moving to Toronto to manage him and help with the day to day operations of Half Life Records. As well, I worked alongside DL and Nine Planets Hip-Hop, managing him, and becoming his exclusive booking agent. I thank that time for making a lot of connections and networking. I managed Classified for three years, and put out two records together. We toured heavily throughout North America. I focused more on the administration and learned the business of music. I went on to become a JUNO Judge, as well spoke on numerous music panels for CMW, ECMAs, and New Music West. At that same time, I interned for URBNET Records and established a great relationship with Darryl and learnt a lot about the business from him.

Currently I’m focused more on the marketing side of the business, as well working with developing artists by consulting and mentoring them. In late 2013 I started to road manage for 2014 Juno Winner JRDN where we just recently finished a stadium tour as main support for Hedley across Canada. We also did a few festival one-offs, as well just finished the Western Leg of the Remedy Tour in support of JRDN’s new project.

HipHopCanada: Who have you already signed and what do you look for in an artist when you do sign with them?

Craig MacMillan: At this point we haven’t signed anyone, but that’s not to say I’m not constantly looking and keeping my ear to the street. I just want it to be the right fit and right artist for both parties involved. We have had a lot of submissions since launching the site but to be honest, I haven’t really had a chance to listen to them all due to an abundance of submissions. The ideal artist that were looking for will have the complete package. Nowadays its about more then just being able to spit bars. I want that next Saukrates, or D-Sisive that’s hiding out there in his bedroom somewhere. Someone that’s ferocious, but maybe doesn’t know how to take that next step. Someone who has a great work ethic and is media trained! (Kass, you know the important of this) as well has that street hustle mentality and wont stop till they reach each target set out for themselves! Basically, someone that has skills and is willing to work, listen and learn. I’m open to all types of genres!

HipHopCanada: How can an artist inquire about possibly signing with Move Right?

Craig MacMillan: Please check out the website Have a look at the services we offer, if you’re feeling the vibe of the site please feel free to reach out and ask us any questions about general services or anything specific you would like to know – we can help you with for your career path. There is a submission page on the site or feel free to email me

Thanks for your time and I appreciate HHC taking the time to learn about our new venture. We are excited to see what comes from this. We are happy to be a part of the industry and look forward to building new relationships down the line.
