YEG to the World: Vol. 2 Recap [Review]
Edmonton, AB – July 9 marked Volume 2 of The 25th Dynasty’s YEG to the World at YEG Dance Club. This is the new thang that has hit the Edmonton scene, which is a monthly showcase of local urban talent. Five acts – whether it be DJs, MCs, or producers – get the opportunity to showcase their art in a 10 to 15 minute set. Volume 2 included Diversity, Arlo Maverick, K-Blitz, K-Riz, Lee’On, Loonie Tunez, Rezza Reckt, and DJ TNT.
It was a small turn out, which made for a slow start, but it also made the performances more intimate. I’d say the highlight of the night was during Rezza Reckt’s set. Rezza (who is also a producer) took to the DJ booth to give us a taste of the latest he’s been cooking in the kitchen. While mixing his beats – K-Blitz, Arlo, K-Riz and friends got caught up in a cypher. Completely unrehearsed and unexpected – it was just all in the moment. “Check this out…they’re cyphering behind my beats,” Rezza proudly stated into the mic. “This is hip-hop right here.” True story. That is what hip-hop is about; supporting each other and working together to build a movement. The majority of the room was all the homies – showing their favorite MC’s love as they gave their all on stage. That’s always a beautiful thing to see.
YEG to the World Volume 3 goes down August 13 (spoiler alert: this showcase is an R&B edition), mark your calendars and come support your local artists at YEG Dance Club.
