Jai Nitai Lotus – Noir ft.Vox Sambou & Sam I Am Montolla (Prod. Kenlo) [Video]
Montreal, QC – Montreal artist Jai Nitai Lotus just dropped his latest mixtape project entitled Acknowledgement. And along with the mixtape release, he’s hit us with a new video for the single “Noir.”
This is an all-senses-engaged video. The track features a blend of old-school hip-hop, reggae, soca, and – of course- a very heavy dose of Montreal. The production on the track was done by Montreal-based producer, Kenlo. Kenlo fuses together all of these different genres to make a hard-hitting beat; the kind of beat that forces you shake your head along with purpose. Jai brought the sassy-pants Sam I Am Montolla on to the track for the hook. And then Jai got Vox Sambou to guest a feature rapped in Creole – yes, Creole. The end result is this “Noir” film – which is actually the polar opposite of any noir film you’ve ever come across.
Here’s the backstory on how Vox and Jai got collaborating: the two have known each other for a while. Last year, they were both nominated for the GAMIQ Awards in Quebec. After the awards, Jai played Vox this joint. It was a fit. Prior to the recording of Vox’s verse, Jai filmed Vox’s live show. “I didn’t understand what he was saying but I felt it,” said Jai. And I feel that 100 per cent. I have no idea what Vox is saying on his verse, but the energy of it all has its own universal language. Jai is hoping that Kardinal gets in on a remix of the track. And I feel like that would be perfect.
So why the title “Noir”? I asked Jai and he filled me in. This was actually originally the title of the beat Kenlo made. It came off a tape where his beats were titled after colours. Jai told me that he personally sees the jam as a bit more of an “orange” song, but he wanted to roll with Kenlo’s original interpretation of the music.
