Progress (Freedom Writers) – Night.Rhetoric [EP]
Toronto, ON – In 2013, Progress made waves as a member of the hip-hop super-group Freedom Writers, who released the Polaris Prize long-listed album, NOW, to much critical acclaim. With the experience under his belt, Progress has switched gears to a solo campaign spearheaded by a new mixtape/EP titled Night.Rhetoric. The project, available for free download, sets us up nicely for Progress’ official full-length debut set for release in early 2015. Click the jump link below to check it out.
Night.Rhetoric, a new Mixtape EP by Progress
Toronto-based rapper/lyricist Progress brings you his debut solo project, Night.Rhetoric, a mixtape and EP featuring six diverse and unique hip-hop songs, exploring a curated soundscape of various electro/house/soul-influenced instrumentals. Some of these beats might be familiar: they’re Progress’s favourite selections by Kaytranada, Flying Lotus, Major Lazer and more. The production isn’t original but the vocals and effects have been engineered by Keita Juma to provide a sonic experience not commonly associated with rap mixtapes.
Night.Rhetoric is a snapshot of Progress’s musical breadth and diversity. A vivid storyteller, he covers everything from critical race politics to hedonism, while advancing the craft of MC-ing through an array of word-play, cadences and rhyme-patterns. This project follows the successful 2013 release of the Polaris Prize long-listed album “Now” by Freedom Writers, A 6 artist hip-hop collective in which Progress is a core member.
Night.Rhetoric is available for free download on SoundCloud and is a precursor to an upcoming full length LP due in early 2015.
