Mike Boyd – 1 Hit Wonder [Video]

Enfield, NSMike Boyd (who you may also know as Classified’s brother) recently released new visuals via Halflife Records for the track “1 Hit Wonder.”

This is exactly what you’d expect from a Mike Boyd video. It’s fun. It’s cheeky. And it’s definitely a little self-deprecating. Mike pulls the fast stops and gets into the character of a guy who dresses like a d-bag and drives a muscle car to overcompensate for things – you know, the kind of dude you’d expect to bump one-hit wonders on the regular. He’s even got the dangling dice on his car mirror. And the denim vest with patches.

This track is brilliant in that Mike delivers all of the standard formulas for a one-hit wonder in a song about one-hit wonders. This track was produced by Classified, and the video was directed by Harv. Check it after the jump.

So here are the formulas for making a one-hit wonder that Mike uses. The first formula is to make sure your song has a catchy hook. Because replay value is of extreme importance. Mike delivers that with the whole “Let me know/ Let me know/ Let me know now” part of the chorus. As a listener, you will sing along to this part. You won’t be able to stop.

The second one-hit wonder formula is to appeal to the listeners who fiend for love songs. Make people feel feelings and they will buy your records. Mike delivers a solid dose of the sappy feels. He uses the whole “1 Hit Wonder” thing as a metaphor for finding love, etc, etc.

The final one-hit wonder formula is to cleverly reference cult-favourite music classics. This appeals to the listeners who feel superior when they catch on to said references within a song. Music junkies dig these little references, too. Anyways, Mike does this by incorporating lyrics and song titles from various one-hit wonders into his actual song lyrics. If you can catch every single reference within this song, you win the game of music elitism, or something.

Oh, and if you haven’t copped a listen to Mike’s Note the Sarcasm album, yet. You should probably get on that ASAP.
