Run The Jewels at Echoplex for Red Bull’s 30 Days in LA (Live Review) [Photos]
Los Angeles, CA – Red Bull Sound Select’s 30 Days in LA is a unique opportunity to see great combinations of artists in different venues across Los Angeles. On November 13, at the Echoplex in Echo Park, the lineup and surprise guest consisting of Thurz, Mystery Skulls, and Run The Jewels was nothing short of legendary.
Thurz set the tone for the night by bringing out a full band with surprise guest DJ Quik rolling through to perform a couple of his classics. Red Bull decided to try and expand the musical pallet of the mostly hip-hop-orientated crowd by throwing Mystery Skulls in the mix, who ran through his electro-pop inspired hit “The Future.”
The crown Jewel (pun intended) that everyone in attendance was anticipating was Killer Mike and El-P, better known as “Run The Jewels.” Being regarded as one of this year’s best hip-hop releases, Run the Jewels 2 blends the best of the past with the best of current sound. Cuts like “Jeopardy” when heard live with it’s deep baseline and shadow boxing worthy lyrics had the crowd snapping their necks in approval.
El-P and Killer Mike decided to make this a one of kind show by bringing out Zack De La Rocha of Rage against The Machine for their Track “Close Your Eyes,” and upped the ante with special guest Gangsta Boo for her feature on “Love Again.”
They finished off their set by performing “All Due Respect” for the first time ever live, with Travis Barker destroying the drums in the background.
The coverage and accolades that Run The Jewels receives is well deserved. Killer Mike and El-P have found something special in their combo and have given hip-hop a fresh injection of realness that is much needed.
