COB Canada – Gladiator Muzik Vol. 1 [Review]
Edmonton, AB – COB Canada has been making their mark on the Edmonton hip-hop scene for quite the minute. On November 14, the super-group released a 16-track mixtape, Gladiator Muzik Vol. 1, which is a compilation of material from MCs; Young Tox, K-Blitz, Rome Angel, Yak Dollaz, Instinc, and Double D (aka Dubz). All hosted by COB’s first lady, DJ Game Girl.
Just like a Gladiator in an arena, COB is vigorous as each member brings heat to this robust body of work. The first three tracks; “Sellin’ it High,” “Talkin’ Bout Me” and “Leggo” were a solid selection to grab the listeners attention from the jump. All effective in their own right, “Leggo” (featuring Instinc and K-Blitz) especially resonated with me with it’s heavy beats and mad lyrics to match. (“Respect my mind, my grind, and my time”, replayed in my head for an entire day. I wasn’t mad at it).
When it comes to COB’s style – they’re consistent in keeping it street – however it was dope to see them experimenting with different styles of rap. For example, “Bags in the Cupboard” is Rome Angel’s comedic spin over k-os’ 2004 hit, “Crabs in the Bucket.” Dubz, Young Tox and Yak Dollas were brilliant on “We on It,” which was sampled over Mally Mall’s “Wake-up in It.” Bars for days.
It doesn’t just take a co-sign from their founder (and Slaughterhouse heavyweight), Crooked I, it takes skill and talent to remain significant in this game. COB Canada elicit both in their lyricism, flow, and production. Gladiator Muzik Vol. 1 is currently available for free download on DatPiff and just as a lil’ bonus, you can peep the video for “B.Y.B”, which is the first visual in support of the mixtape.
