J57 – Helmut Lang ft. F. Virtue, Mike Maven, Katiah & Akie Bermiss [Video]
New York City, NY – Calgary-raised, New York-based MC F. Virtue recently hit us up with his latest collaboration track with J57 titled “Helmut Lang.” This track comes to us off of J57’s free Wax Aesthetic EP.
The video shows our dudes partying it up with a laid-back coolness that is the epitome of what every dude turning up wishes he could be. The track features a line trade-off between J57 and F. Virtue. One MC spits two bars, and then the other one spits another two bars. And that whole back-and-fourth shapes each verse on the track.
If you’re familiar with the way the verses work on Souls of Mischief’s “93 ‘Til Infinity,” you’ll feel this. Except J and F are trading off a little more frequently: after only two bars. So it comes across as a bit of a dialogue – a very fancy Helmut Lang dialogue of supremeness. Check it after the jump.
I asked F. Virtue about it and he told me that J57 came to him with the “master plan” of trading off every two bars. They did it all through text. So J would text F two bars of lyrics with a voice memo recording. And then F would hit him back with two more bars and a voice recording. “It was probably the most fun I’ve had making a song,” said F. Virtue. It only took the guys a day or so to finish the lyrics.
Then they got Katiah in on the rap bridge, Mike Maven in on the vocals, and Akie Bermis in on the back-up vocals. Wall Sean (who produced the track) directed the video, and the result is this masterpiece of a video. Also, shout-out to F. Virtue for repping his Calgary Flames at 1:00, and showing us some of that hometown love.
