Scholars Entertainment – These Cigarettes ft. Sweet Petey, KAi Sky Walker & Craig G [Audio]

Toronto, ON – Toronto-based production company Scholars Entertainment has just released one of the most monstrous collaboration tracks titled “These Cigarettes” off the forthcoming Maintenance Vol. 1 EP. The song features verses from Nickelus F (aka: Sweet Petey), Vancouver’s own KAi Sky Walker and MC Craig G from the Juice Crew. The production on this track was was done by L’Orange, with mixing and mastering courtesy of Ottawa’s The LJ.

Scholars Entertainment was conceptualized by Scott Brownhill. Scott told me he started up the production company as a way of giving shine to up-and-comers on the scene. He’s a musical matchmaker. And he’s linking up collaborations between artists all across North America. Basically, he puts the artists together and makes them play nice. And the result is extreme supreme music. Check it out below.

So here’s the deal with all of these cats: I’ve been following Nickelus F for a few years and he’s arguably one of my favourite MCs in the game. Dude hustles harder than hard. By the time I’ve finished listening to one of his tapes, he’s already dropped like three other new projects for me to keep up on. He’s got this deep nasal flow and a serious wordplay game; probably one of the best wordplay games around. His rhymes are metaphors stacked on similes stacked on brilliance. Ugh. I could go on for days about how mad I am that this dude has been getting slept on for the last few years. Start with the Vices album, and work your way through his discography from there.

L’Orange is another surprising addition to this track. L’Orange is such a beast. He’s done some work with Blu, which is how I got on to him. My fellow HHC homie Sarosh introduced me to this track titled “Alone,” which featured Blu and had this weird eerie jazzed out production. Turns out that L’Orange was the mastermind behind that brilliance. His production is in a league of its own. It’s always got this dark jazzy undertone, and usually features dialogue vocal soundbites.

So having Sweet Petey and L’Orange in on a collaboration with our own Canadian KAi Sky Walker and the legendary Juice Crew rap god, Craig G is the best Christmas gift ever. Thanks, Scholars Entertainment. I’m keeping my ear to the ground on y’all. Keep smoking these cigarettes.
