Dope Piece – Mean Dream [Video]
St. John’s, NL – On Jan. 10, Newfoundland rapper Dope Piece launched fresh new visuals for his track “Mean Dream.” Dope Piece hops in on an old school-influened Mike’L beat and hits us with some mad hungry bars about his “Mean Dream.”
The video was sent to me by the homie Vater, who’s been keeping me in-the-loop on East Coast Canadian rap. Y’all owe him an Edible Arrangement or something. He’s been doing free PR for you cats in the name of good ol’ hip-hop appreciation. Salute to Vater!
Unrelated side note: Dope Pieces’s Tune Squad Space Jam jersey in the video is everything. Another unrelated side note: Dude still totally reminds me of the hypothetical lovechild of Mac Miller and OB O’Brien. Okay. Now that’s all off my chest, check out the video for “Mean Dream” after the jump.
The video stays low budget (shout-out to Ali$e on the filming), but it’s got that grimy street rap feel to it. The last Dope Piece video I checked was more of a psychedelic cloud rap excursion. This one is way murkier.
All squad-mobbing and liquor-pouring video cliches aside, Dope Piece hits us with one of the catchiest hook lines I’ve heard in a while: “I’m a C.R.E.A.M. fiend with a mean dream.” Brilliant. Special shout-out to the rando on Tumblr who’s been using this line as his blog tag.
Anyways, “C.R.E.A.M fiend with a mean dream” is a brilliant line because:
A) Wu-Tang. Make a Wu-Tang reference – or even better, a reference to “C.R.E.A.M.” – and people will eat that ish up. This is partly why Drizzy made such a killing off of “Poundcake.”
B) Fiending for “C.R.E.A.M.” sounds supremely cool. Let me clarify, here: Dope Piece is NOT a C.R.E.A.M. connoisseur or a C.R.E.A.M. collector or whatever; he’s a C.R.E.A.M. FIEND. Key word: fiend.
C) The whole “Mean dream” thing rhymes with “C.R.E.A.M. fiend.” Plus, it sounds ambitiously hungry.
So word to Dope Piece. I’m a huge fan of him, lately. He’s dropping a new tape on us within a few days, here. So keep your ear to the ground on that one. I’m expecting major things.
