Johnny Darko – In Time [Video]

Toronto, ON – Higher Learning Culture collective member Johnny Darko (formerly known as High Society) brings in the new year with a slick new stage name, a monster new Love Triangles EP, and a dope new video for the track “In Time.”

The video kicks off with Johnny leaving a voicemail for his girl at 5 a.m.: “Looks like we’re fighting again.” Then Johnny takes us into his world. I mean – mostly, he’s just reminiscing about times with his boo. But he takes us through flashbacks of times he had with his girl and house parties with the homies. Then he spends the rest of the video roaming around New York, getting tattooed, chain-smoking, carrying around a large McDonalds bevvie, and drinking on rooftops. The video was shot by FLYERS director, Mike Rhodes. Check it after the jump.

This video reminded me a lot of that joint Mac Miller did a while ago called “Thoughts From A Balcony.” The premise behind it was that Mac was just standing on a balcony and reflecting back on everything – good and bad – that had brought him to the present. Johnny’s invoking that same sort of nostalgia. He’s reintroducing himself to us and giving us context. We already know him as the dark and broody MC. But this video lays it all out for us. By the end of the video we have a better idea as to why – exactly – he’s got that raw edge on him. That, and Johnny finds himself with some fresh new body ink.

And just so y’all know – I’m a huge fan of Johnny’s new stage name. He’s always had that introspective broody thing going for him. When he went under the name “High Society,” I always just thought of him as a weed rapper by association. He’s definitely not a weed rapper, though.

Besides, weed rap is usually all about lighting up and vibing out. But Johnny’s music always gets under my skin a bit. It’s got that vibe-out cloud rap sound. But it always hits a little deeper than I expect. Johnny is deep like the ocean. So word to the new name. He’s Johnny Darko. Seriously. If Donnie Darko got into the rap game, he’d f**k with this.
