Scholars Ent. – When It Was Real ft. Tona, Show Stephens, C-Rayz Walz & AG da Coroner [Audio]
Toronto, ON – Toronto production company Scholars Entertainment has just released another monster collaboration release titled “When It Was Real” off the forthcoming Maintenance Vol. 1 EP.
The best way I can describe what Scholars Entrainment does is a musical matchmaking service. Scholars Entertainment’s Scott Brownhill lurks around in the underbellies of North American hip-hop to bring underrated Canadian and American artists together on collaboration tracks. We first saw the supremeness that was Scholars Entertainment on the previous “These Cigarettes” record, which featured Sweet Petey, KAi Sky Walker & Craig G.
This second release sees Toronto artists Tona and Show Stephens alongside New York’s own C-Rayz Walz and AG da Coroner. The track reels us in with some Lone Monk production and hits us with a commentary on realness. More specifically, realness in music. “Can we go back/ When shit was real/’Cause everything seems so fake.”
I really love how this joint is practicing what it’s preaching. Each artist approaches the track with his own take on realness. This is 100% genuine fresh cooked audio. It serves as proof that “real hip-hop” isn’t just a by-product of the ’90s; it’s a universal sound that comes from staying authentic to oneself. Shout-out to Scott Brownhill for recognizing the real.
