Drake

Saturday, August 8, 2015

Aubrey “Drake” Graham is a Grammy-Award winning, platinum-selling recording artist and multi-faceted entertainer. Born in Toronto on October 24th, 1986, Drake is the son of Sandi and Dennis Graham, a drummer who worked with Jerry Lee Lewis. Since first being recognized for his role on the highly-successful television series Degrassi: The Next Generation, and going on the road with rap star Lil Wayne after hearing Drake’s music in the summer of 2008, Drake has asserted himself as a trailblazer in the creative world. Drake released his mixtape So Far Gone in 2009 and his massive influence in the hip-hop and contemporary music space has commanded the market since, with no end in sight. Drake now holds the record for the most number one hits on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Chart. Drake has catapulted into stardom not only as an artist, but as a cultural maven with October’s Very Own. Sharing the story of the thriving music scene in Toronto, Drake has built out OVO from a small-scale blog about his crew to an all-encompassing lifestyle brand, including his clothing company, his record label OVOSOUND and his annual OVOFEST.

k-os

Saturday, August 8, 2015

Before Kanye. Before Drake. Before Frank Ocean. Before The Weeknd. Before Odd Future. There was kos. k-os’ latest double album, BLack on BLonde is two records: one album of rock tunes, on which k-os sings and plays drums, guitar and bass, and the other of old-school hip hop jams, including a song with his hero, Black Thought from The Roots. Making history in his hometown of Toronto, BLack on BLonde is Canadian hip-hop’s first double album and the only thing large enough to contain k-os’ big musical ideas. Innovative, provocative, groundbreaking and fearless – the world’s only artist to record with both Guyanese rapper Saukrates and indie rock band Broken Social Scene – k-os released the Joyful Rebellion in 2004, featuring standout tracks “Crabbuckit,” “Man I Used to Be” and “B-Boy Stance.” Almost a decade later, k-os is twice platinum, toured with Drake, recorded with The Chemical Brothers, won a Source award, won multiple JUNO and Much Music Video Awards (with a staggering combined 34 nominations!) and was a 2005 Grammy nominee.

A-Trak

Saturday, August 8, 2015

At a time when the DJ sits firmly at the center of popular culture, A-Trak stands out as MVP, the key participant who holds together all facets of the craft. Very few share his mastery of turntablism while also sitting at the forefront of musical innovation, looking keenly to the future with history tucked in his back pocket. A true connector, Trizzy hops effortlessly from colossal festival stages to sold-out concert venues and sweaty underground clubs, building links between hip hop and electronic music while watching genre barriers crumble. After spending years as Kanye West’s tour DJ and consigliere, he founded the celebrated record label Fool’s Gold in 2007 and developed the careers of artists such as Kid Cudi, Danny Brown and Flosstradamus. As a Grammy-nominated producer, A-Trak’s seminal mix of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Heads Will Roll” marked an entire generation’s introduction to dance music. Duck Sauce, his irreverent collaboration with Armand Van Helden, flipped the bird to chart-topping formulas and reached #1 in 12 countries with the ubiquitous “Barbra Streisand”, electronic music’s first true viral music video. A-Trak easily segues from working with EDM’s elite to revitalizing rap superheroes, launching Federal Reserve with Cam’ron and Low Pros with Lex Luger. He casually picked up 3 VMA nominations along the way.

P. Reign

Saturday, August 8, 2015

For years, Toronto-based sensation P Reign, has thrived as an award-winning, chart-topping Hip-Hop star in Canada. Releasing mixtapes, Canadian Dream and When It Reigns It Pours in 2010, P Reign watched his friend Drake skyrocket to superstardom following So Far Gone. The two Toronto sensations represented different sides of the city, and had vastly different pasts, but both bonded over over a love of girls and music. P Reign would accompany Drake on the Away From Home Tour covering all of Canada and his perspectives resonated with an underplayed experience of many fans. With his major label debut EP Dear America, the artist also known as Preme is making a rush for the border, as the self-proclaimed “King of the North” a nickname derived during his younger days as an Ode to one of his top 5 – TI. A versatile MC, P’s music is not just street-stuck. The first single from Dear America, “DnF”, which features Drake and Future is aimed squarely at audiences with a freakier side.

Kaytranada

Sunday, August 9, 2015

Born in Haiti and raised in the city of Montreal, Canadian artist Kaytranada has experienced an explosive rise in the past couple of years with his irresistible production and live sets. Before touring the globe and amassing millions of hits online with his series of beloved tracks and mixes, the young man came up as a true disciple, absorbing hip hop and RnB culture since his childhood and finding ways to make the music his own. Since the age of fourteen, when he first began to DJ and the following year when his brother introduced him to music production software, his output has been relentless. Most recently, he was approached by Brodinski to drop the single “Free Things In Life” on the hotly-tipped French label Bromance, has headlined tours in Europe, Australia and North America, and released his newest single and video “At All” which has already conquered dance floors worldwide and introduced his face to the world with an unforgettable video. Now, he continues to bridge the gap between the dance world and hip hop/RnB, with a solo album and a series of high profile collaborations that will confirm his position as one of the most important producers in today’s musical landscape.

The Funk Hunters

Thursday, August 6, 2015

The Funk Hunters are one of Canada’s busiest electronic acts. Performing their signature high-energy DJ sets and groundbreaking Audio-Visual show at some of the world’s most popular music festivals and clubs has earned them an international following. The duo (Dunks & The Outlier) first teamed up because of a mutual love for “Hunting” good music, and today this passion still rings true as they continue to champion the simple but often lost idea that the music itself comes first, regardless of attachments to genre. The Funk Hunters’ name is now in high demand, receiving bookings, accolades, and remix requests from all corners of the electronic music scene. Armed with 4-turntables, their very own custom synched visuals, and the unique ability to create live mashups and remixes, their live show stands out. Seamlessly blending original productions with everything from Hip Hop to House, Glitch Hop to Drum & Bass, and everything funky in between, The Funk Hunters create original sets never replicated.
