Decolonize: 13th Annual House of PainT Festival to take place in Ottawa Aug. 25 – 28

Ottawa, ON – Hip-hop is usually well represented at festivals in Ottawa – Bluesfest did another great job putting on for the genre (where was Drake though?) – but no one does it better than the House of PainT Festival of Arts and Culture taking place annually under the Dunbar Bridge. This will be the festival’s 13th year in business.

With a cool and unique location within walking distance from Carleton University – and at a time when students are flocking to the city to get settled for the semester ahead – the festival serves as the perfect summer send-off and sure to give you more than your fill of hip-hop needs.

It all goes down between Thursday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Aug. 28 inside Brewer Park (210 Hopewell Avenue). Keep reading for more details.

HoP brings together the four pillars of the culture as more than 200 graffiti artists, urban dancers, hip-hop artists and DJs of all levels will gather for a 4-day festival which is promoting the theme of decolonization.

“Hip-Hop is synonymous with decolonization. The genesis of hip hop was all about carving out space where space was denied. Hip hop encourages self-expression while nurturing the roots of our community – bridging the 5 elements through living art and breaking down structures that divide us.”

This year’s HoP is especially important as it marks the Ottawa return of the DMC DJ Competition (Friday, Aug. 26), where DJs from Ottawa and surrounding cities will compete for a spot at this year’s 2016 DMC World DJ Championships(presented by Rane) in London, UK.

The main event on Saturday will feature the legendary Rock Steady Crew judging crew dance battles alongside feature performances by EPMD and A-F-R-O & Marco Polo on Sunday, Aug. 28 during the live concert. Hip Hop Brunch and the Knowledge Conference are also part of the programming on Sunday, Aug. 28. Other acts scheduled for HoP include Dan-e-o, Wasiu, Bless, Yusso, Da Great Deity Dah, Sarah MK, Drezus, Beny Esguerra and New Tradition, Tanya Evanson, Alex Lost and more.
