Maestro Fresh Wes to help Carleton University celebrate 75th anniversary on Jan. 18

Ottawa, ON – The godfather of Canadian hip-hop, Maestro Fresh Wes, returns to Carleton University on Jan. 18 to help the school kick off its 75th anniversary celebrations.

Maestro studied at Carleton in the mid-1980s, and credits his experience on campus and in a new city with giving him the inspiration to take a shot at making music full-time.

A couple years later, the song “Let Your Backbone Slide,” released with his debut album in 1989, helped hip-hop generate mainstream attention and respect in Canada — and the rest is history.

Being at Carleton and in Ottawa really helped me find myself. Then I transcended. I went back home to Scarborough, worked hard, and a year and a half later I got my record deal.
