Drake sets record for most Billboard Music Awards wins in one night: 13
Las Vegas, NV – Drake was the big winner at this year’s Billboard Music Awards, taking home 13 awards and surpassing Adele as the artist with the most BBMA wins in one night.
He had already picked up 10 awards in the pre-telecast categories, and picked up another early during the live broadcast for Top Male Artist.
“Life is like toilet paper. Either you’re on a roll, or taking shit from assholes.” – Drake
He then won the Top Billboard 200 Album award for Views, which came with a noteworthy acceptance speech that included hitting on one co-host, Vanessa Hudgens, and squashing a longstanding feud with the other, Ludacris.
His performance of “Gyalchester” inside Vegas’ Bellagio Fountains was monumental and he capped off the evening by doing something no other recording artist or group has done before him.
With his crew flanking him on stage – including his father – Drake claimed his 13th trophy of the night with the Top Artist award, surpassing the record set by Adele in 2012.
It was obvious Drake was going to win some awards – he came in with 22 nominations – but Billboard really acknowledged Drake’s complete domination of 2016. Views and singles like “One Dance” owned the charts and destroying, on more than one occasion, every streaming music record in sight. Basically, Drake was the only person that was able to beat Drake’s numbers.
It might come as a surprise to some, but this is the also the first time Drake has dominated a Billboard awards show. Before this year he had been nominated 33 times but only won once, Top Rap Artist at last year’s show. The Billboard Music Awards had been discontinued in 2007 but was reborn in 2011. Had the show been around in 2009, when his rise to fame started to accelerate, he almost certainly would have picked up some more nominations, if not a win.
But how many Billboard trophies he’s won in the past is really irrelevant. What matters is this year Drake stole the show and a Canadian rapper now holds the ALL TIME record for most wins in an evening at one of the most prestigious awards shows in the music industry.
And this is what he said to close out the show: “Life is like toilet paper. Either you’re on a roll, or taking shit from assholes.”
